Creating a Feline-Friendly Vertical Space
Cats crave elevation. Learn how to design wall-mounted shelves and tall scratchers that stimulate your cat's natural instincts while looking like modern art.
The Instinct to Climb
In the wild, cats are both predators and prey. Climbing high allows them to survey their territory for hunting while remaining safe from larger ground predators. Even indoor cats retain this instinct. If you don't provide vertical space, they will claim the top of your refrigerator or your curtains.
Designing the "Cat Superhighway"
A true cat superhighway allows a feline to navigate an entire room without ever touching the floor. Here’s how to build one:
1. Start Low, End High: Use a stable base (like a modern scratching post or an armchair) as the "on-ramp" to a series of wall-mounted floating shelves.
2. Ensure Non-Slip Surfaces: Bare polished wood is dangerous for jumping cats. Apply a sleek, low-profile carpet pad or sisal fabric to the top of the shelves to give them grip.
3. Provide Multiple Exits: Cats hate feeling cornered. Ensure the superhighway has at least two ways up and down so they never feel trapped by another pet or a human.
